Model Aeroplanes // La Belle Angèle

Last week I decided (very last minute) to take a trip through to Edinburgh to catch Model Aeroplanes as they took on La Belle Angèle. It's been an absolute age since shooting these guys and it was so much fun getting back into the swing and trying some new shooting techniques out during the gig.

Unfortunately I arrived to the venue to only catch the tail end of support band, NOAH NOAH, but what I heard was what set the crowd up for a cracking night of music.

It was also good fun to catch up with the Indigo Velvet lot after last shooting for them at T in the Park. They'll be on tour very soon, and it's thoroughly recommended you get along to at least one night of it. Not to miss!

RETRO VIDEO CLUB // THE MASH HOUSE - EDINBURGH

Saturday there was another busy one in Edinburgh this time with Retro Video Club headlining The Mash House. Support came from Lyndsey Craig, and SHVLLOWS. Nicely energetic and really sweaty!

INDIGO VELVET // T IN THE PARK 2016

This year was the first time in two years that I'd not covered T in the Park from a media/press level. I was however still fortunate enough to get along to Sunday's festivities with Edinburgh band, Indigo Velvet. It was also the first time they had performed at T but they looked right at home as soon as they took to the stage and gave the crowd a good dose of energy.

VUKOVI // COPPER LUNGS // THE SESH

Last Monday I headed into town to catch VUKOVI headline Buskers, with support from Dundee's own Copper Lungs and The Sesh.

It's nearly been a whole year since shooting VUKOVI at T in the Park 2015 - they didn't disappoint then and, even with it being a Monday night this time round, they certainly put on a belter of a show again!

The venue was a bit difficult to shoot in with there being very minimal lighting, and for the light that was available it tended to come across quite harsh and heavy in contrast. Luckily with the kit I use I was able to bump up the ISO (pushing between 3200 and 4000 for this gig), but even then still had to recover some details in post.

Fitness Shoot with Francesca

Monday past, I travelled up to Aberdeen to shoot something a bit different to my usual kind of thing. Francesca is currently in the middle of training for a bodybuilding and fitness competition and we thought it'd be interesting to get some shots of her progress so far. It was nice to try out some different techniques too.

Copper Lungs at Fat Sams // ft. GoodCopGreatCop, Cold Years and Broken Boy

I spent last Saturday night shooting Copper Lungs as they headlined their home show at Fat Sams in Dundee. We'd been looking to work on something for a while, but due to scheduling issues had been unable to. I'd also only caught them live once before but knew to expect some big things with this being a headline performance. This was one I was looking forward to shooting!

Support came in the form of GoodCopGreatCop, Cold Years, and Broken Boy, who all helped build up the night towards the headline.

Broad Cairn.

It's been a few years since last taking on Broad Cairn, a mountain in the Scottish Grampians. On Sunday past, a few friends and I set out in the attempt to make the summit - which after some effort across the scree near the top, we eventually made it. We got a cracking day for it and some dodgy sun burn to boot!

FOREIGNFOX

A few months ago I was contacted by Scottish band FOREIGNFOX to shoot some new things for them.

The brief was to capture it moody, dark, and gritty [insert joke about Fife], and a few locations between North Queensferry and Braefoot Bay. On the day the weather was quite temperamental which only helped to get the mood right.

SSE Hydro for FE Live Audio

A few weekends ago, I was commissioned to shoot for FE Live Audio - a sound hire company located in Glasgow. They required shots of their PA systems in use during CHVRCHES homecoming show at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

Model Aeroplanes - Tour 2016 - Fat Sam's, Dundee.

The last Scottish gig of the tour was at Dundee's world-famous, Fat Sam's, and what a great turn-out for the home show! The crowd were mad from start to finish, and definitely made the night electric.

Day 2 of the tour meant travelling to Glasgow's Òran Mór for yet another top notch performance. 

Was great to see some familiar faces too and have a little catch up pint or five afterwards!

Model Aeroplanes - Tour 2016 - The Caves, Edinburgh.

Model Aeroplanes kicked off the first date of their headline tour at The Caves in Edinburgh. The EP hadn't been released yet and fans were expecting big things. Safe to say no one left disappointed!
They were supported by Into the Ark and Edinburgh's own Retro Video Club.

Model Aeroplanes

Model Aeroplanes - Something Like Heaven EP Cover

Not long after they were signed by Island Records back in September 2015, I was approached by Scottish band Model Aeroplanes, to collaborate with them on a cover for their first ever EP release. We put together ideas and pitched it to the label, and once signed off, we went ahead and shot both the cover and some promotional material with the band. The edited work was then sent to the talented American graphic designer, Samuel Adam, for him to add the finishing touches. Read more about his side of it here.

With the EP not out until March 4th 2016, the artwork was embargoed until late February/beginning of March with the promotional work being sent to blogs, magazines and newspapers.

CHVRCHES // Fat Sam's Live // Dundee

Last night I was fortunate enough to get to shoot Scottish 3 piece CHVRCHES, supported by Australian band Mansionair, as they played their first ever show at a sold out Fat Sam's in Dundee.

A near flawless performance, Mansionair made the classic mistake of forgetting which city they were in when lead singer, Jack Froggatt, mistook Dundee for Aberdeen. He quickly realised his mistake and the crowd taking it in good spirit jovially booed. They went on to play to the packed Fat Sams crowd and performed a great show.

CHVRCHES, going from strength to strength in recent years, stunned the Dundee crowd with their mix of now classics intertwined with tracks from the new album. It was an incredible show to be at!

AERIAL

Original post March 24th 2015

It’s been three years since I was last at the controls. 
As a kid, I’d always dreamed of being a pilot - who didn’t? So when I started taking flying lessons (first one at 16) I was sure that one day I’d be turning the dream into a career; something still to be realised. 

However the bug is still and truly alive, and after the three or so hours in the air I’m itching to get another fix... I need more.

Fishing // Arbroath Cliffs

Last month, a couple friends and I decided to take advantage of the semi-Indian summer and head up the coast to the cliffs at Arbroath, in the vain attempt to catch some fish... or anything that dared to bite.

Whilst my friends took their fishing rods, bait, boxes and other equipment, I took with me my Nikon D600 and Mamiya 645 1000s medium format film camera (which I've still to get processed and scanned).

We clambered down the steep cliff-side, determined not to slip up, and made camp at the foot of it as the waves crashed in. The sea spray was in the air and the weather was perfect; we were keen for something to bite as we cast out.

We did catch something unbelievably huge but it unfortunately got away...
